Wow, it has really been a while since our last interview… Months, in fact.
We’ve brought an end to our rather long hiatus with a colorful interview with one of the most creative guys in the gaming industry. We talked with WayForward’s Matt Bozon about their very first kickstarter project, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. At the time of writing, there are 39 hours left on the Kickstarter page, and boy, did it turn out well.
In our chat with Matt after the break, we talk about how the game came to be, and what it means for the Shantae series. Read on for this exclusive! -Greg Boe Continue Reading →
Most of the Gameboy Color games I’ve played were a lot more basic than Shantae.
I was in grade school when I first played this game. It was included on one of those old-school 50-in-1 GBC cartridges. Looking back at it now, I wonder if all those games were pirated… Dang it. To make up for my lingering 6th grade guilt, I decided to download a copy on my 3DS the week it was released on the Virtual console. Now that I’m older and in effect, a more experienced gamer, I could actually get further in this rather difficult adventure.
With two new Shantae games coming soon, I thought this would be a perfect time to look back at this GBC classic. Read on for my analysis. -Greg Boe Continue Reading →
Why is it that I’m always at least a day late with announcements?!
Here’s some of the biggest news I’ve heard all day. WayForward recently shared that they have a Kickstarter project, but it wasn’t until yesterday that is was unveiled. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is confirmed for Wii U, PS3, PS4, 360, and Xbox One. This is Shantae’s very first HD adventure, and I must say, it’s looking fantastic. Until we get this game, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is also on the way in the near future.
Check out the trailer above, and make sure to stay tuned for more details on this fantastic new project! -Greg Boe

WayForward is the perfect example of a developer that knows how to make a downloadable game. Most of their biggest successes are found on Nintendo systems, including the Shantae series. In a recent Nintendo Force interview, the developers shared that they are working hard on their forthcoming Nintendo 3DS platformer – Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. In the third installment in the series, our former half-genie friend (Shantae) is forced to team up with her nemesis, Risky Boots, to save Scuttle Town from a powerful foe. For an idea of the game’s length, we’ve been told that the game world is twice as large as the one in Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on the DSiWare service. Everyone’s favorite hair-whipping half-genie is about to go on her third adventure in Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse on the Nintendo eShop, but until then, you’re gonna want to make sure you’re caught up on her previous adventures. That’s why WayForward has shared that they are bringing the original Shantae for Gameboy Color to the 3DS Virtual Console sometime in between June and July.
Also, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge is already available on the eShop, so check it out today! -Greg Boe (admin)
Earlier this week, I told you guys that a new Shantae was hitting the Nintendo 3DS. Well, my copy of the November issue of Nintendo Power arrived yesterday, and it’s full of new info on the game. Shantae may have lost her genie powers in her last adventure on DSiWare, but she’s back in a new adventure on the Nintendo 3DS eShop! In Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, our ex-genie hero has found herself teaming up with Risky Boots to save Sequin Land from a powerful force. We’ll post more about the story later, but for now, it’s just great to know there’s a sequel in the works from WayForward! -Greg Boe (admin)

WayForward has created some amazing franchises, but my personal favorite is Shantae. Starring the titular half-genie known as Shantae, you serve as the guardian of Scuttle Town, protecting the townspeople from the female pirate Risky Boots. The first game in the series, Shantae on Game Boy Color is a very tough find these days, often selling for over $100 online. While you can already purchase its sequel, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge for DSiWare, WayForward has announced via Nintendo Power that the original is finally on its way to the Nintendo 3DS eShop. While we still have to wait a few months to get our hands on the hair whipping adventure once again, be sure to stay tuned here for even more WayForward news. Have you already played Shantae on GBC? -Greg Boe (admin)
Many developers are currently making 3DS games as of present, but most of you have overlooked WayForward, the geniuses behind Shantae for Gameboy Color, and It’s brilliant DSiWare sequel, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge. Here’s some good news, I e-mailed Matt Bozon (Creative Director) from WayForward asking what 3DS games they have in development, and to my surprise, I actually got a response. He said:
“Show this to the old woman. And to all of your readers please [not shown]. Also, yes we’ve got Spongebob Squigglepants 3DS available now, and Centipede and Happy Feet Two are on the way. We can’t comment on any of the titles from our publishing partners unfortunately, so you’d need to contact Konami and Majesco directly.”
So there you go, and in other news, WayForward plans to re-release the GBC Shantae game for 3DS Virtual Console. - Greg Boe (admin)
