While Nintendo seems convinced that Namco Bandai is the company to make the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and 3DS, some fans (including myself) are still just a little bit skeptical about how well they will do. Why did series creator Masahiro Sakurai decide to let the Tekken team make this game?! Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada shed some light on the subject in a recent interview with Siliconera:
“I think Nintendo chose us just because Smash Brothers is a fighting game. We have over 17 years of continuously developing titles in our franchise [Tekken], I think they felt we were a [good] choice for that,”
“Also, we’ve continually developed a very good relationship with Nintendo,” . “Maybe not necessarily in the public spotlight but kind of behind the scenes. We have established a very good working relationship with them. Not just Nintendo, but as a company, we have a very good relationship with Sakurai-san at Sora as well. I think that we are in very good position to make a great game for the Smash Brothers series.”
I think I’m starting to see that Sakurai put an enormous amount of thought into choosing Harada to work on the project. Let me also share one more opinion with you guys: I think that because the team behind Tekken is working on this game, what could result is a game plays just like the other phenomenal games in the series, but also has more realistically proportioned characters, and better graphics–especially on the Wii U version! Think about it, Nintendo is known for creating some of the most addictive games of all time, but what they aren’t known for is having good graphics. Though the Wii U has more graphics capability than other consoles right now, Nintendo hasn’t exactly had a lot of experience with HD games, which is why it’s probably best that the Tekken team is in charge of the game’s development. Especially since this will undeniably be one of the top selling games for Wii U, if not the top seller. With all Harada’s talk of being best buddies with the original game’s creator, I don’t think we have much to worry about!
