A Look Back: Nintendo Vacuum Cleaners

Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it, and for Nintendo, that would mean some pretty unexpected stuff would be happening. For example, before Mario and his brother graced our 8 inch TV screens, Nintendo brought us a vacuum cleaner, called the “Chiritori-” (Translations say Chiritorie, but in Japanese it’s simply an extension of the last i, not an e). This machine was worthless as a device for cleaning one’s house, as it was only 16cm (6 inches for our American friends) big, and therefor could not hold enough dust or dirt or cereal to clean even the smallest of messes. However, that was not the main focus of the device, but rather it emphasized the fact that this was, in fact, a remote control vacuum, allowing you to clean that spot of dirt you tracked in without having to leave the couch! Personally, I’d like to see what Nintendo could do with this idea now! What do you think? Also, what household appliance would you like to see Nintendo reinvent, and how would it be different? -Ryan Baxter
