Even though the Nintendo eShop has now taken center stage with new Nintendo 3DS Download games, many developers have still managed to make some great games for the Nintendo DSiWare service (also available on eShop). Last week, Teyon released Escape the Virus: Swarm Survival in North America, and after downloading, I was in for a pleasant surprise. Is this game worth looking into? After the download, I tried out the first of the game’s two modes: Normal. This mode is played a lot like games like snake, but with quite a few twists. You use the touch screen to control your DNA and attempt to add more to your chain. You aren’t just left alone to rack up points until you get bored and quit; there are viruses that will try to mess you up. If any part of your chain that is hit by a virus, it will fall off, and you’ll break your streak. The more DNA you collect, the more points you’ll earn, so you’ll have to be extra careful to avoid enemies.
The other mode this game has (made especially for this title) is played a little differently. You are given the task of collecting DNA babies and bringing them back home. When you come in contact with a baby DNA, instead of joining a chain, you’ll gradually grow bigger (and much slower). There are plenty of different strategies you can use in this mode. Will you bring each baby back one by one, or will you sacrifice some speed by collecting more to earn even more points when brought back home? It’s really up to you to experiment and find what works best for you.
I was quite surprised with how much fun I had with this game. One major reason that I enjoyed this game so much was its simplicity. No huge gimmicks, no crazy controls, just good pure fun. The only thing this game really lacked was content, but it’s still pretty good considering that it’s old for only $1.99. If you’re looking for some simple, affordable fun, you should consider downloading Escape the Virus: Swarm Survival.
