Rewind 8 years into the past, when Shanatae was released on the Gameboy Color. Now, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge for the DSiWare service is out and has blown my mind away. With an interesting story, superior graphics, and some amazing platforming gameplay, this game is among the best DSiWare games of all time. Continue reading for the review! - Amanda
Shantae is a young half genie who lives in her town’s lighthouse. Her ultimate rival is the infamous Pirate Risky Boots, who is constantly trying to steal anything and everything valuable in Scuttle Town. One day, Risky gets her grimy paws on Shantae’s uncle Mimic’s mysterious lamp. Thus begins the search for the 3 magic seals. Along your journey, Shantae’s friends and her special abilities will help you on your quest to defeat Risky and save Scuttle Town.
There are 3 magical seals that need collecting, making 3 bosses to battle. The first boss is an octopus named the Squid Baron. He looks cute and friendly at first, but don’t give into the adorable art style… He’s really a demon octopus who just wants to beat you up! The second boss is what seems to be a tedious tower of monsters, but don’t judge a book by it’s cover. As long as you come prepared and ready to kick butt you’ll have the tower finished in no time. The third boss is Hypno Baron. This boss is a creepy ghost guy who throws stuff at you like a baby at lunch time. As long as you avoid his attacks and whip slap him with your hair then the third magical seal will be all yours! Along your way, you’ll pick up a bunch of new skills such as Monkey Dance, Elephant Dance, Elephant Stomp, Monkey Bullet, Mermaid Dance, and the Mermaid Bubble.
Overall, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge is a fantastic game. The visuals are great, the storyline is very intriguing, did I mention it’s totally addicting? The graphics are amazingly colorful and well laid out. Wayforward has really out done themselves this time. My favorite level is the deep sea in Mermaid Cliffs. It really feels like I’m underwater! This is by far the best game on the DSiWare service. I had a lot of fun playing this game, and recommend it to any one with $11.99 and access to the DSi Shop/eShop.
